Abantu translates to “people” in several Nguni (found in Southern Africa) languages, namely isiZulu, isiNdebele, isiXhosa & siSwati. It started as a radio show on No Signal, during the first UK lockdown in 2020. One of the many lockdowns that saw Amapiano step onto a global stage.

I wanted to create an intentional space for the music to live, where people could also engage with the people, stories and cultures behind this music, beyond a viral internet moment. A space inclusive of all that Southern Africa has to offer, not limited to its commercial successes. A space created with care and depth, which puts people at the forefront and can stand the test of time. A destination.

Whilst the radio show continues to cultivate an international community and build an archival legacy, with this event we will experience Abantu’s first physical manifestation, in the form of my (Charisse C) first headline show.

I’m excited to be curating a night where I, alongside the DJs I have carefully chosen, can perform in my element. To experience Amapiano, and its adjacent genres, situated in the heart of electronic dance music in London and beyond.

“South African’s club experiments have rightly been held up as some of the best things to have happened to our dance floors. As Abantu boss Charisse C showed us in her debut sessions for NTS, there’s plenty more to [South Africa’s] thriving and constantly-evolving club culture,” writes Trench Magazine.

The Abantu dancefloor is a dancefloor of freedom and discovery. An exploration of the intersections between the genres and cultures that have shaped me. Where you can experience a sense of home, whilst being transported to places new and yet somehow familiar.

We operate a venue free from judgement, discrimination, harassment or hate.
